World Breastfeeding Week {San Diego Doula, Childbirth Educator, Birth Photographer}

(Reposted from 8-2009)
The first week in August was World Breastfeeding Week. I'd like to share my nursing experience(s). First of all I'd like to say that breast is best. Literally, a miracle from the Lord. It is amazing to watch your baby grow and thrive on breastmilk alone. It might amaze me more than birth...maybe!

This is my Jackson at Tricity Hospital, summer 2005. It was my very first time nursing. I prepared myself by reading LLL's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. He had a great latch and nursed 30 min. after birth and didn't let go until he was 14 months old. He weaned himself because I was 3 months pregnant =). Jackson was such a great nurser he made enough milk for 5 babies. I had an entire freezer full that never got used (they denied me to donate because of acupuncture!?!?). I could pump 16 oz in about 10 min at the height of it. WOW. That was 2 8 oz bottles in a flash! And best of all - it's FREE. The photo below is Jackson nursing on the plane to Hawaii in summer 2006 at 11 months.

I learned how to discretely nurse in public, in a sling, while shopping, in my car, or anywhere. Jackson was a GREAT co-sleeper and I got lots of sleep because I would sleep right through his night feedings...except to change his diaper. He wasn't talking when he weaned so he never had any cute names or signs for nursing - but he's happy when I show him the pictures of him getting "mommie's milk."

My second experience with nursing was very different than the first. This is Owen. My very high needs, strong willed, sensitive child. With REFLUX. Oh man, what an experience. Here we are at Pomerado Hospital in April of 2007. That's right, our first 2 babies are only 20 months apart.
The reflux caused Owen to gag, cough, and choke at every feeding - even with a bottle. He ate very little milk in one sitting and most of it came right up. This caused very frequent feedings for a very long time. Enter my extreme gratitude for free milk, available on demand wherever we are. I can not immagine having to make a bottle of formula that often and then watch as the dollars flew onto the floor, my clothes, his clothes, etc. When it's free, it's just a laundry problem and not your life savings being spit up.

This experience was also different because I had much much much less milk. Which was nice because I wasn't leaking or in pain 24-7 like with Jackson, BUT I did have to give formula to the babysitter when I couldn't pump enough milk while at work. She didn't have to use much, but it was different than my freezer full, remember? I was on the mini-pill birth control which decreases supply, and NEVER slept. 2 hours a night total for the first 3 months and very little more than that until he was 6 months. Stress (aka: no sleep) decreases milk supply. The other factor, I believe, was that he only stayed latched on for a few minutes at a time.

I'm really glad he nursed for 17 months because otherwise I'm not sure he would've ever let me get near him. He was very difficult to bond with and was not a snuggler. He didn't co-sleep. He couldn't even sleep in our room b/c he was allergic...so down the hall he went at just 5 weeks old. He started talking (very well) at 14 months so he never had to use baby signs. At the end he would ask "mommy milk please" when he wanted to nurse and then when he wanted to switch he'd say "o-side please, o-side." It was very difficult on both of us to wean. He would cry and beg, "MORE mommy milk, PLEASE! MORE!" For various reasons though, I was done. And little did I know that 3 weeks after weaning would I be pregnant again! OH MY.

My favorite picture of Owen nursing is from our Beaver, Utah family reunion trip in July 2007. I made a scrapbook page out of it =) (click photos to see larger images)
My current nursing situation is going fabulous. I couldn't be happier. Milk supply is not too much and not too little. A little leaking, but I "went green" and bought reusable cloth breastpads. Here I am nursing Gavin at 2 weeks old with my friend Nikki and her 2 week old daughter - at the beach. We're old pros now, right? Ha.
I love this nursing cover that my friend let me borrow, but I usually just use the sling when they are tiny. It doubles as a carrier and nursing cover - love that!
Gavin had a tremendous natural birth (I'm sorry I'm lagging on that birth story!) and latched on for the first time 30 min after. We didn't know how much he weighed for the first 2 hours because he was nursing the whole time! What a good boy. He is my first baby to keep his milk in his tummy (95% of the time) when he burps. He really is not a spitter. The other boys drenched everything in the near vacinity - ewww. This is an answer to prayer. I prayed for a baby who did not have reflux or spit up a lot and the Lord blessed me. Another amazing thing is that he has been able to nurse laying down (aka: in the bed while I sleep or stare at him) since birth. This was very important for my difficult first week post-partum when I could not sit without pain. I don't know how he had such great head control...again a blessing. My other 2 boys were not able to do this for weeks and maybe months after birth.
Gavin is 8 weeks old (tomorrow!) and nurses frequently during the day (1-3 hours, usually every 2) and then only twice at night/early morning. He loves to suck and doesn't always want milk to come with sucking, so he loves his Avent binky. I am able pump almost an ounce a minute...usually I pump only for 5 minutes and get 5 ounces. I only pump when I'm going to leave him with my husband - usually for the gym or church - so we don't have a storage yet.
Happily nursing in the sling.

FF: Conquering the Mud

Flashback to summer 2008: we were running, training, in shape, and both of us were 20 lbs lighter. We Mastered the Mud (especially Mike!) - read here.

The only thing that's the same this year is my shirt and the race. I still have it and am wearing it tomorrow to the Mud Run. When I wrote that post last year I was training for a half marathon. I weaned Owen at 17 months and 3 weeks later I was...pregnant! There went the running.... but we now have our 3rd blessing =)

Fast forward a year:
I just gave birth 4 months ago, am nursing every 2-3 hours, have NOT been running/training, am NOT in shape, and am 15 lbs heavier. BUT I'M STILL DOING THE MUD RUN. Hmmmmm. More like Mud WALK. Thank goodness my husband is going to stay with me since he has been too busy with work to train either. He certainly is not in shape to WIN like he did last year. So we're just going to kick back, socialize, take pictures, and maybe jog a little. We will still be sore! Ha. Prayers needed! I hope we finish within the time limit....LOL

FF: 8 years ago today

Early in the morning I was getting ready for Dental Hygiene school. A few minutes after I woke up I heard my roommate call me. She had a sad and anxious tone in her voice. "Robin, turn on the TV, quick!"

I watched in shock and horror as a plane crashed into the WTC. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Were we in a war?!
We had to get ready and go to school anyway. Our quizzes were canceled and we somberly went about the day in a dreamlike state. I called all my friends and family that had loved ones in NYC to make sure everyone was all right.
The next couple of weeks were a total blur. Watching the news and trying to study. Feeling horrible for all the lives lost and devastation left behind. But touched at all the wonderful stories of compassion and love being poured out on those in need.
God promises that he will bring beauty amidst ashes and trade our mourning for joy in Isaiah 61.
I am so thankful that God is near to comfort us and lead us in times like these...and everyday. I am thankful for all of His representatives who poured out the Spirit of Christ on people in need during the crisis. What a blessing to the hurting. Thank you firefighters for all your hard work.

I will never forget 9-11-01

FF: Facebook & Friends

Circa: Late Summer 1997
September 2009
One of my best buddies from college in Santa Barbara was PJ. I was only there for one semester (it was just a transition semester) but we became very good friends. We kept in touch and visited each other several times a year for a few years and somehow lost contact after we both moved a few times. New numbers, new addresses, etc. I remember being upset that I couldn't find her back in 2002 when I got married. They didn't have Google, Facebook, or MySpace back then. Much to my delight, FACEBOOK reunited us a few months ago. I was exstatic! She drove 2 hours from Los Angeles to visit me and my family a few days ago. Not much has changed - we still have very similar likes/dislikes/philosophies. We both had on ZERO make up, despite the fact we had both showered that day. Low maintenace girls! We had a fun and relaxing day catching up - pedicures, lunch, and lounging on my couch talking about life. I am so thankful for facebook and reuniting with good friends =). Love ya Peej, can't wait to hang more. XOXO

Jackson Ray Baker's Birth Story
(written in 2006 for my scrapbook)

On July 30th we went to sleep at 11pm. I woke up on July 31st (10 days passed my ‘due date’) at 1:30am to what I thought was an earthquake. Mike said he didn’t feel any earthquake and that I should go back to sleep. I went to the bathroom and found my underwear were very wet, but I never felt any leaking after that so I wasn’t sure if my water had broke or not. I tried to go back to sleep but started to have contractions. I decided I was hungry and made myself a peanut butter and honey sandwich and drank a glass of orange juice. About 20 minutes later Mike found me dazed on the couch and asked if I was in labor. We started to time the contractions and they were 10 minutes apart until 2:30am, then they were 5 min. apart. I got in the shower and the water felt fabulous on my back. By 3am we were sure I was in labor so we called Rosie Peterson, our doula, and she arrived at 4am. When she arrived the contractions were 3 minutes apart and getting stronger, but I could still walk. It felt good to get on my hands and knees during the contractions so I did that for awhile and then we tried relaxing in the bed w/classical music and a warm sock filled w/rice on my back. At 5am I got in the bath tub and was in heaven.

The warm water relaxed me so much that I didn’t want to leave. Soon after the contractions were only 30 seconds apart - I wasn’t getting a break anymore. I looked up at Rosie and said, “Rosie, do I have to go to the hospital?” She said, “yes sweetie, I think it’s time now.” It must have taken at least 2o minutes for me to slowly crawl out of the tub on to the floor, put on my clothes, and get to the car. I only had 30 seconds to slowly walk (or crawl!) in-between contractions. I kept thinking of Jesus and saying His name over and over in my head to stay calm and peaceful. So far the labor had been very pleasant and calm.
We arrived at the TriCity Hospital Emergency room at 6:20am. I sat in a wheelchair in the lobby waiting for an escort up to L&D and felt a lot of pressure in my bottom - the baby was definitely moving way down. The nurse in Triage was rude and made me feel panicked and irritated. They finally got me a room around 7am. I sat straight up in the bed wondering why my back felt like ‘the jaws of life’ were ripping my bones apart. Wasn’t it supposed to hurt in your stomach? I had lost my good, calm, pleasant laboring skills and started to complain. I was sure I was going to die and needed an epidural. Rosie started quoting scripture to me and I yelled at Mike that he needed to pray and talk to Jesus because I absolutely could not do this anymore.
A little after 8am I needed to push and the doctor had not arrived yet. The anesthesiologist walked into the room and laughed,
“I guess you don’t need me!” and walked right out. I pushed twice before the doctor came running in and I promptly told her that I did not want an episiotomy. This pushing stage was so much relief compared to the back pain I had for the last hour. I had about 2 minutes of rest in-between pushing contractions and it felt great! I was so happy I was having my baby and I did it drug free and without an induction! When the head came out the doctor was worried the shoulders were stuck so they made me turn my legs a certain way and had me push even though I didn’t have a contraction. Jackson Ray Baker was born at 8:30am!
We did it! We have a boy! He was a little blue and wasn
’t crying so the nurses took him immediately and started suctioning his lungs. They cleaned him up and gave him to Mike about 20 minutes later. I’ve never seen my husband so happy and in love...with me and our new baby. He handed me the baby and as soon as I gave him quick glance (head, arms, body, feet, etc) I put him to my chest to breastfeed for the first time. I have never been so happy. I praised God out loud and in my heart for giving me a perfect baby and a perfect drug-free labor. We called all of our family and friends to share the good news and then the visiting began....

And now he's four years old. Wow, the time passes so quickly!
Happy Birthday J-Bone, we love you
He is my little buddy and such a fun boy. I still thank Jesus everyday for giving him to me =)
